Voyager 2 PWS Jupiter Flyby, July 9, 1979
Voyager 2 made its closest approach to Jupiter on this date exactly 45 years ago. To mark the anniversary, we present all available plasma wave audio data acquired on the day of flyby, July 9, 1979. This video is about 1 hour 35 minutes in duration and is mostly boring (authentic) data . . . You've been warned. (I see I didn't truncate a spacecraft clock value correctly, resulting in some bonus frames from July 8. You're welcome!)

    This moon seems to have a weak magnetic field, the sounds are similar to a magnetic field like Ganymede, which made a sound with more beeps.

      The harmonic tones are the result of a square-wave grid modulation by the PLS instrument. (All these are explained in the Saturn encounter video referenced in the description.)

    Oh, man, I was in such a hurry to get this done that I didn't notice that the time is messed up. The intention was to begin on July 9. The beginning of July 9 corresponds to spacecraft clock 2/20631:22, but I started with 2/20631:02, so there are a few bonus (boring) frames at the beginning. Enjoy!

      @@buzzkillington8078 Frequently the low frequency bursts are ion acoustic waves (which actually propagate as longitudinal waves, just like sound pressure waves in the atmosphere). In this case, however, I think they may be little snippets of chorus emissions. The higher frequency stuff is not-so-creatively called hiss. (Note that I'm really a computer guy, not a scientist, so I'm guessing here.)

      @@shantimugdhoneelkonthopolt8680 I found the original audio at www.jb.man.ac.uk/~pulsar/Education/Sounds/sounds.html and made a quick video at ruclips.net/video/ZJzp54x1LCs/видео.html The primary frequency of the pulsar is just a little off, so maybe the data used for the mp3 wasn't really sampled at 1600 Hz.

      @@Space-Audio alright, decrease the hertz for human hearing so that it isn't painful (Human hearing can only handle 130 - 160 dB to 1,600 Hz - 60 kHz.)

    Is it weird that I find this oddly soothing- But either way, I really like this because it makes us listen to the actual *real* sound of Saturn. I still like the ones meant for sound therapy too, but it's better to listen to the real thing than something that probably isn't the real sound of the planet.
